Oncology Hospital :: Lung Cancer Unit

Objective

At HCIH people with lung cancer are treated by a multidisciplinary team of experts. Its work is devoted to improve survival and quality of life for lung cancer patients.

The Most Effective Treatments

For lung cancers that have not spread beyond the lung, surgery is the best treatment. We have the expertise to be extraordinarily precise in removing the cancer while preserving as much normal function as possible.

For patients whose tumours are more advanced, a program of chemotherapy before surgery appears to double or triple the cure rate. The program is now sometimes being used to treat larger tumours that have not spread from the lungs.
When surgery is not the best option available, our radiation oncologists use 3-D conformal radiation therapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to deliver the highest possible radiation dose targeted precisely to the tumour while minimising radiation exposure to normal lung tissue and other organs in the chest.

The team comprises of specialists in medical and radiation oncology, surgery, pathology, pulmonary medicine, behavioural sciences and smoking cessation.
