Snore and APNEA - treatment and evaluation

Is snoring frequent?
One in four people snore habitually. The most frequent problem is in men and obese people. The condition worsens with age.

What causes snoring?
Modern medical science has discovered that snoring is related to the physical obstruction in breathing during a dream. This obstruction happens when muscles of paladar, the uvula and sometimes the tonsils are relaxed during a deep dream, and produce vibrating noise when air passes through them. The excessive size of weave of the later part of the throat, narrowness in the conduit of the airflow to the paladar and/or uvula can cause snoring.

Must I worry if I snore?
Socially, snoring is annoying for family life, causing sleepless nights for other members of the family. People who snore do not agree with nor are welcome as room companions. Also, snoring produces an annoying and difficult dream to the snorer. Finally, snoring can be an indicator of respiratory obstruction in the dream (APNEA) that is a medical problem.

What is the obstruction of the breathing in the dream?
The obstruction of breathing in a dream is diagnosed when strong snoring is interrupted by episodes of complete respiratory obstruction. This condition can be very serious and sometimes fatal, if these episodes are of more than 10 seconds and happen more than 7 times in one hour. The cumulative effect of these episodes of obstruction of the breathing reduces the oxygen level in the blood that goes to the brain, forcing the snorer to be a very slight sleeper, so that the respiratory conduit and the muscles stay rigid. This prevents the snorer to obtain the benefit during the deep dream and solely causes them to dream during the daytime hours, at work or worse, while handling machinery.

What is laser treatment for snoring?
Laser treatment is like a visit to the dentist. The patient is treated directly in the doctor's office, seated and completely wide-awake in a comfortable armchair, after applying a local anaesthetic (lidocaine). The laser is used to reduce and to remodel the uvula, which does not have any real function. Each session takes around 10 minutes and the complete treatment will take 3 to 5 sessions with intervals of 4 weeks.
