In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a sophisticated and modern laboratory procedure designed to fertilize ova (eggs) of donor or recipient's own, to once fertilized, being subsequently implanted.

Egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside a woman’s body and then transferred to her uterus. Eggs can be removed from a woman's ovaries using one of two possible procedures. Transvaginally, involving the insertion of a needle through the vagina until the ovaries or laparoscopically, which is a method that involves inserting a small thin tube with a viewing lens through an incision in the navel to get to the ovaries. After the eggs are removed and mixed with sperm in a test tube or laboratory dish, the eggs are monitored for several days until there is evidence that fertilization has occurred and the cells have begun to divide, upon which they are then returned to the woman's uterus.

A woman may be given fertility drugs before having an IVF procedure so that several eggs mature in the ovaries at the same time. Once removed, the eggs may be frozen and saved either in a fertilized or unfertilized state for additional IVF attempts.

The first assisted conception method developed for sterile couples occurred in 1978 which enabled the birth of the first “test tube” baby to a woman with tubal infertility. This method is what is referred to as IVF-ET (in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer). Since then new techniques and variants have been developed over the years that have increased the efficacy of treatment and steadily extended the indications for it.
